What a human needs to survive

With the recent earthquake in Turkey, we’ve all been reminded just how frail life can be.

With the aftermath, many more people are and will suffer given the lack of resources and essential necessities to survive.

If you’re open to hearing a personal story from a local of the area and how you can help please read here.

As many of us have our basic lifestyles and survival needs covered, sometimes it’s good to remind ourselves of what a human being (you) needs to survive optimally in every day life and a crisis.

It can cut right through all the noise at times and can help give us a solid foundation for our health.

The most essential nutritional components for a human are:

  1. Protein: Protein is essential for growth, repair, and maintenance of tissues in the body. It is also important for the immune system, and it can help prevent muscle loss during periods of starvation.

  2. Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates provide energy for the body, and during hard times, they can help sustain energy levels.

  3. Fats: Fats are a rich source of energy, and they also provide essential fatty acids that the body cannot produce on its own. They are important for the brain and nervous system, and they can help with nutrient absorption.

  4. Vitamins: Vitamins are essential for various functions in the body, and during hard times, it’s important to consume foods rich in vitamins, particularly vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

  5. Minerals: Minerals are also essential for various functions in the body, and during hard times, it’s important to consume foods rich in minerals such as iron, zinc, and magnesium.

  6. Water: Adequate hydration is critical for survival. It’s important to consume safe drinking water and other fluids to prevent dehydration… A good rule of thumb would be your bodyweight in KG times 0.033 for the litres you need.

The most essential elements of shelter for humans in cold weather are:

  1. Insulation: A shelter should be properly insulated to prevent heat loss. This can be achieved by using materials like thick walls, double-glazed windows, or insulation materials in the walls and roof.

  2. Heating: A source of heat is crucial in cold weather. This can be in the form of a fireplace, wood stove, electric heater, or central heating system.

  3. Ventilation: Proper ventilation is important to maintain good indoor air quality and prevent condensation buildup. This can be achieved by using vents, windows, or mechanical ventilation systems.

  4. Protection from the elements: A shelter should be able to protect its occupants from wind, snow, and rain. This can be achieved by building the shelter with strong, durable materials and ensuring that the roof is watertight.

  5. Lighting: Adequate lighting is essential in a shelter, especially during the winter months when daylight hours are shorter.

  6. Water and sanitation: A shelter should have access to clean water and sanitation facilities to maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of disease.

  7. Adequate space: A shelter should provide enough space for its occupants to move around comfortably and store their belongings.

  8. Emergency supplies: In case of a power outage or other emergency, it’s important to have emergency supplies like blankets, candles, and non-perishable food on hand.

The most essential elements of mental health for humans include:

    1. Positive relationships: Human beings are social creatures, and positive relationships with friends, family, and other social supports are essential for mental health. Strong social connections can help provide a sense of belonging, reduce feelings of loneliness, and improve mood.

    2. Emotional regulation: The ability to regulate emotions is crucial for mental health. This involves being able to identify and understand emotions, and to respond to them in healthy ways. Effective emotional regulation can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve overall well-being.

    3. Self-care: Engaging in self-care activities, such as exercise, healthy eating, and adequate sleep, can help improve mental health. Taking care of physical health can also improve mood and reduce stress.

    4. Meaningful activities: Engaging in activities that are meaningful and enjoyable can help improve mental health. This can include hobbies, volunteering, or spending time with loved ones.

    5. Resilience: Resilience is the ability to bounce back from difficult situations. Developing resilience can help individuals cope with stress and adversity and maintain mental well-being.

    6. Sense of purpose: Having a sense of purpose can give individuals direction and motivation, and help them feel fulfilled. This can involve setting goals, pursuing passions, or contributing to a cause or community.

    7. Access to mental health care: Access to mental health care services, such as therapy or counseling, is important for individuals who may be struggling with mental health issues. Seeking professional help can provide support, guidance, and treatment for mental health concerns.

Not only are all of these areas essential for humans when times are easy, they are also essential when times are tough. After the earthquake, many are suffering in almost all them.
